Let’s talk about the Clinical Stand-Down.
Clinical Stand-Down is the end-of-day meeting I highly encourage all nurse leaders to implement daily.
This meeting is short, intentional, and incredibly impactful.
It sets the tone for clear communication and organized follow-through between your day shift and evening shift teams.
Who Should Be There?
Nursing Administration
Evening Shift Supervisor (or incoming nurse leader)
What Happens in a Clinical Stand-Down?
This isn’t just a casual chat. The Clinical Stand-Down is where you:
Review the follow-up delegated in the morning meeting
Ensure all tasks were completed or assigned properly
Review the overall flow of the day
Identify any outstanding tasks that still need to be completed
These tasks can include:
Lab results that need follow-up
Appointment confirmations or changes
Admissions or discharges
Hospital transfers
Unresolved staffing issues
Why It Matters:
I remember before I had implemented Clinical Stand-Down, I would come back to work the next morning with tasks that weren’t complete.
Implementing this process improved our facility outcomes, strengthened communication, and created accountability across all shifts.
This meeting helps you close out your shift with intention and provide your evening supervisor with clear direction on what still needs to be done.
Because let’s be real: nursing is 24/7. Each shift plays a major role in how you, the Director of Nursing, maintain compliance, consistency, and most importantly — resident safety.
Final Thought:
If you haven’t implemented Clinical Stand-Downs yet, I encourage you to start today.
This 10-minute meeting can save your facility from major miscommunications, survey tags, and avoidable stress.
Provide your team the clarity they need to operate with confidence and purpose.
Do you have this meeting in place at your facility? If not, what are you waiting for?
Your team needs clarity, and your residents deserve consistency.
Start your Clinical Stand-Down today and lead with intention.
