As nurses, whether we’re just starting out or stepping into new leadership roles, having a clear plan is essential.
When you begin your nursing career, it’s important to take time to think about what you want it to look like.
What type of experience do you want to gain? What roles do you aim to achieve? Creating a career plan is the foundation of your growth and development as a nurse.
Start with Career Goals
If you’re a new nurse, set goals that help you build the skills needed to reach the next level.
For instance, if you’re aiming to become a supervisor, focus on mastering problem-solving, clinical skills, organization, and leadership. Each step you take builds a foundation for the next.
Establish Goals for Each Role You Step Into
As you move forward, remember that each role requires a new set of goals.
When I became a Director of Nursing, I learned that this position wasn’t just about my own goals; it was also about helping my team achieve theirs.
Meeting with my team, learning about their goals, and working with them helped me become the leader they needed me to be. It was about creating a shared vision, which made us stronger together.
Set Goals for Your Next Steps
If your goal is to move from Director of Nursing to Regional Nurse Consultant, focus on developing skills that will allow you to solve challenges across multiple settings.
When I was a Director of Nursing, I made a point to assist other facilities to expand my knowledge and learn to manage complex issues across different environments.
Each experience was a step closer to achieving my larger career vision.
Make Your Goals SMART
Every goal should be measurable, realistic, and written down with clear steps. Break down each goal into actionable steps and adjust them as you grow.
Revamping goals when needed is key; it keeps you focused and flexible.
Define Your Path
Whether you’re a new nurse or a seasoned leader, setting goals gives your career direction.
Think about what path you want to take, then create the steps to get you there.
Your journey as a nurse is yours to shape—each goal you set is a stepping stone to the nurse you aspire to be.
